This Novella of the House of Night novels tells us the story of the beginning of Professor Dragon and Professor Anastasia. We are first taken to present day Oklahoma where they are performing Jack’s funeral Pyre. Dragon unintentionally releases a spell that Anastasia made before her death to remind Dragon of his oath to her. As he remains vigil before the funeral pyre he remembers how the oath came to be.

We meet a young Bryan Lankford as a wild and arrogant human. As a fledgling he was still wild and arrogant but also much more. Before he became a full vampire he earned the title of Master Swordsman, he was an excellent student, and admired by many for his strength, good looks, and bravery among other things.

Anastasia, 22, was the new professor of Spells and Rituals at the Tower Grove House of Night in St. Louis, Missouri. Because of her being close in age with the fledglings, many students went to her and asked her to make a love spell for Dragon Lankford to fall in love with them. Instead she makes a spell that will make everyone see him for who he really is.

The spell works so well that she sees the warrior he can be if he has her by his side to help him be a better man. She also sees the warrior he can be if he does not temper his strength with mercy. She felt that as a fledgling, he was arrogant and had much to learn about honor and integrity. But there was an obvious attraction that neither could ignore.

Meanwhile, St. Louis has a new sheriff in town who hates vampyres. Anastasia believes that she can prevent him from causing harm to them using a peaceful spell. What she nor Dragon know is how dark and tainted this humans soul has become.

P.C. and Kristen Cast wrote a beautiful romance marked by tragedy. This novella was a wonderful read that had me utterly unable to put it down until the very end. This is a must read for fans of the House of Night Novels.
